Chinese pressure equipment manufacturers hold a growing share of global fabrication — but China's domestic credentials do not carry into Canada. A SELO/TS manufacturing license, GB 150 design dossiers, and domestic certificates are not recognized by Canadian provincial safety authorities. Equipment above CSA B51 thresholds needs a Canadian Registration Number (CRN), and for a GB-based design that is best treated as a design validation project: cross-checking the design against ASME, resolving material equivalency, aligning weld qualifications, and presenting it all in an English package declared by a Canadian P.Eng. Done in the right order, it is a predictable 3–6 month path.
Can Chinese Equipment Be Sold in Canada Without a CRN?
Not above CSA B51 registration thresholds. Pressure vessels, boilers, fittings, and piping over threshold generally cannot be legally sold, installed, or operated in a Canadian province without a CRN from that province's authority; the limited exemptions in CSA B51 rarely cover industrial equipment. Canadian buyers and installers increasingly ask for the CRN before a purchase order is signed, and unregistered shipments risk refusal at installation and stop-use orders after the fact.

The Material Equivalency Problem
The single most common blocker: Q345R is not listed in ASME Section II, and Canadian reviewers will not accept a GB grade at face value. There are two workable options.
- Respecify Canadian-market units to ASME materials (e.g., SA-516-70) — the cleanest path, though it requires sourcing and possibly requalifying welding procedures
- Prepare a material equivalency justification: side-by-side chemistry, mechanical properties, and testing documentation supporting the GB grade against its closest ASME analogue — accepted case-by-case at the reviewer's discretion
- Either way, mill certificates must be traceable and translated; untranslated or incomplete material test reports are a routine rejection trigger

- Complete design drawings in English — title blocks, notes, and weld maps included
- ASME recalculation of the pressure design; GB 150 calculations alone are not an accepted basis under CSA B51
- WPS/PQR package aligned with ASME Section IX

- Quality system evidence — ASME certification if held, otherwise detailed quality control manual documentation
- Provincial application forms and, for fittings, the Statutory Declaration

Which Province First?
Where the purchase order is. Alberta (ABSA) and Ontario (TSSA) receive the bulk of first registrations from Chinese manufacturers, reflecting oil and gas and manufacturing demand. ABSA is Canada's most rigorous reviewer, with 10–20 week queues — clearing it first makes later provinces smoother. There is no automatic reciprocity: each province issues its own CRN, and the CRN Reconciliation Agreement (January 1, 2020) coordinates the authorities but does not create national coverage. A SELO/TS license is not accepted in place of design registration, though the documentation discipline behind it usually means the GB dossier is complete, which shortens preparation.
