CRN Registration for Pressurized Electrical Enclosures

Pressurized (purged and pressurized) electrical enclosures used in hazardous locations may require CRN registration when their pressure shells exceed threshold conditions under CSA B51. Kopfkino advises on CRN registration requirements for pressurized enclosures and manages submissions where required.

When Pressurized Enclosures Need CRN

Many purge-and-pressurization enclosures operate at very low positive pressure and may be exempt from CRN requirements. Operating pressure below 15 psig is typically exempt. Large pressurized enclosures for offshore or petrochemical applications may exceed thresholds.

Applicable Standards

Pressurized electrical enclosures must comply with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA C22.2 No. 30 (purged and pressurized equipment), and IEC 60079-2 for Ex p protection. Where the pressure shell requires CRN, the vessel must also comply with ASME VIII-1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Ex p enclosure need both CSA and CRN certification?
Possibly yes — CSA covers electrical safety; CRN covers the pressure vessel aspect if thresholds are exceeded. Kopfkino provides a threshold analysis for your specific enclosure.
