CRN Registration Ahead of Final Investment Decisions on Canadian Gas Projects

Every LNG train, compressor station, and gas plant on Canada's growing project list has one thing in common: none of its pressure equipment can be installed until each design carries a Canadian Registration Number in the province where it will operate. We have registered designs across most Canadian jurisdictions, and we can tell you the CRN queue does not care about your project schedule. With LNG Canada Phase 2 on the federal fast-track list, Ksi Lisims lining up European offtakers ahead of FID, and Enbridge's Sunrise expansion cleared to build, a wave of equipment purchase orders is forming off the coast of BC, and when it breaks, the vendors who already hold CRNs for their vessel and fitting families will be quoting while everyone else is filling out statutory declaration forms.

The Project Wave Now Forming

Statuses above are as reported in early August 2026; FID timing is the developers' to decide. The direction of travel, though, is not subtle, and every one of these sits in British Columbia's jurisdiction.

What the Equipment List Looks Like

Talk about LNG megaprojects stays abstract until you unpack one compressor station or process module into the hardware that needs design registration:

  • Suction and discharge bottles, scrubbers, and pulsation dampeners on every compressor unit
  • Two- and three-phase separators and filter coalescers through the gas train
  • Glycol and mole-sieve dehydration packages (towers, reboilers, exchangers

  • Relief valves, control valves, strainers, expansion joints, hoses, and instruments, all fittings, all requiring their own registrations by category
  • The interconnecting piping and skid assemblies that stitch modules together

CRN Registration Is the Longest Lead-Time Item

For vendors new to Canada, the surprise is that a Canadian Registration Number is provincial, not federal, and your ASME stamp is necessary but not sufficient. Review queues run months, not weeks, and they lengthen exactly when everyone shows up at once, which is what a wave of FIDs produces.

  • Vessels register as designs; fittings register by category (A through H), each with its own supporting data set
  • Statutory declarations, Canadian-compliant drawings, and CSA B51-aligned calc packages are the entry ticket
  • Provincial differences in submission format and technical expectations mean a package accepted in one province can bounce in another

Register Design Families, Not Individual Jobs

The vendors who win this cycle will not register one vessel per purchase order; they will register families. A well-scoped design family covers a range of diameters, pressures, and nozzle configurations under one registration, so the next PO inside the envelope needs no new review at all. Module and skid suppliers have a second scoping decision: what registers as a vessel, what registers as a fitting, and what falls under piping rules. Common Errors by Out-of-Country Vendors

  • Assuming the ASME stamp is enough. It is the starting point; registration to CSA B51 in each operating province is the finish line.
  • Discovering fitting CRNs at PO time. Valves, hoses, and instruments each need category registrations that vendors assume someone else handles.
  • Leaving registration to the EPC. Contracts increasingly push CRN responsibility back onto the equipment supplier, read your quality and documentation clauses.
  • Treating provinces as interchangeable. A package built for Alberta does not automatically sail through BC.
  • Starting statutory declarations at delivery. Paperwork that could have run in parallel becomes the critical path at the worst moment.

A 90-Day Preparation Plan

  1. Inventory your sellable designs: which vessels and fittings would you quote into these projects, and which can be grouped into families?
  2. Pick your provinces deliberately. For this wave, BC comes first; Alberta matters for upstream gas processing feeding it.
  3. Assemble calc packages to the current code edition and CSA B51: clean, consistent, and review-ready before any PO exists.
  4. File the family registrations now, vessels and fitting categories both, so the review months run while the FIDs are still in boardrooms.
  5. Set up your Canadian support structure: who signs declarations, who answers reviewer questions, who handles revisions when a project spec shifts.

Common Questions from Vendors

Do we need a CRN in every province?

You need registration in each province where the equipment will operate. For this project wave that starts with BC, but a design family registered in one province can be extended to others, far cheaper than starting over each time.

How long does registration actually take?

Plan in months. Queue times vary by province, by season, and by the quality of the submission, and they stretch when a project wave hits. That variability is exactly why filing before the purchase orders is a competitive weapon rather than an administrative chore.

What is the difference between a vessel CRN and a fitting CRN?

Vessels register as individual designs or families with full design calculations. Fittings (valves, flanges, hoses, instruments) register by category (A through H) with supporting data sets appropriate to each. A gas project needs both, and the fittings list is almost always longer than vendors expect.
